Department of Literature and Cultural Studies

The Philological School in Brașov has its own intellectual identity, a vision of literature and culture that the formula of the new Department of Literature and Cultural Studies expresses without betraying it. Built around writers with recognized personality, such as Gheorghe Crăciun, Alexandru Mușina, Ovidiu Moceanu, Carmen Elisabeth Puchianu, Romulus Bucur, Andrei Bodiu, Caius Dobrescu, Ruxandra Ivăncescu, Mihai Ignat, the faculty has promoted, by the configuration of its study programmes, the specificity of the research and its presence in the social and cultural public space, a conception of the centrality of literature in the expression and understanding of the modern social imaginary. The academic merits and results of the faculty’s academics are equally recognized and validated in the academic community through titles, awards and full coverage of university proficiency levels, all of which ultimately have led to the establishment of a specific and original Doctoral School. The relation between the two components of the Department – Literature and Cultural Studies – represents not only the openness to new research directions and the support given to the social sciences-oriented concerns of some young colleagues, but also the consecration of a way to understand the direct relationship between literature and social existence which has been a defining feature of the faculty ever since its founding, in 1990. Also, the integration in the same department of Romanian, German, English / American and French literatures attests, in organizational terms, a cosmopolitan and comparative vision on literature that has always been the core of our conception.

The department hosts, on a weekly or bi-monthly basis, the series of public conferences, book launches and debates initiated by Professor Andrei Bodiu under the title Evenings of the Faculty of Letters, Master’s / Doctoral Conferences of the Faculty of Letters.
